SUMMARY NARRATIVE OF MAJOR ACTIVITIES
Chapter I OPERATIONS
Middle East Region had a busy year in 2017 flying a total of 13,702.4 hours. This was divided between 61 fixed
wing aircraft and 4 gliders, and 1,060 qualified aircrew. Statistics for 2017 are:

Capt Patricia Overman
Capt Overman has been very active during 2017 supporting the wings of the region though quarterly conference calls with her
wing counterparts and making sure that they have the support that they need. Cadets in Middle East Region also participated in
Cyber Patriot and the Middle East Region Cadet Competition. Capt Overman has supervised the Region CAC and assisted with
CAC projects such as:

Director of Professional Development
LtCol Elizabeth Dunn
2017was an active year for Professional Development in MER with the year seeing the wings professional development officers
working on hosting a variety of training weekends throughout the wing.
MER Senior Members were busy with their own professional development during 2017 with the following achievements.
9 Level 5 Completions (Gil Rob Wilson Award)
16 Level 4 Completions (Dr. Paul Garber Award)
34 Level 3 Completions (Grover Leoning Award)

Personnel
The Personnel and Administration sections of the MER Staff ensured a timely completion of Award and Promotion actions,
making sure that, members receive the recognition for their hard work.
Public Affairs
Major Julie Holley
Major Holley supported a robust PA program and coordinated with the wings within the region to ensure that all wings had the
appropriate communication plans in place.
Finance
No financial issues were reported for 2017
LtCol Phyllis Griffin
Chaplain
LtCol Wayne Byerely
Chaplain Byerely continued to process applications for Chaplains and Caracter Development Instructors in a timely manner.
During 2017 Chaplain Byerely made sure that MER was ready for the new Mission Chaplain and Chaplain Support qualifications,
with preparation of training materials prior to rollout of the new materials.
Historian
Major Joseph E Myers
The MER Historian provided support to LtCol Phil Saleet’s Museum outreach at the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
Inspector General
MER completed 2017 without any open IG complaints, or concerns
Safety
Major Guy Butts
MER completed 2017 without any open safety issues.
MER Safety Blitz completed on 3/26/17
MER Safety Officer College from 6/5/17 – 6/9/17 at MERSAR

Director of Professional Development
LtCol Elizabeth Dunn
2017was an active year for Professional Development in MER with the year seeing the wings professional development officers
working on hosting a variety of training weekends throughout the wing.
MER Senior Members were busy with their own professional development during 2017 with the following achievements.
9 Level 5 Completions (Gil Rob Wilson Award)
16 Level 4 Completions (Dr. Paul Garber Award)
34 Level 3 Completions (Grover Leoning Award)

Administration

Personnel
The Personnel and Administration sections of the MER Staff ensured a timely completion of Award and Promotion actions,
making sure that, members receive the recognition for their hard work.
Public Affairs
Major Julie Holley
Major Holley supported a robust PA program and coordinated with the wings within the region to ensure that all wings had the
appropriate communication plans in place.
Finance
No financial issues were reported for 2017
LtCol Phyllis Griffin
Chaplain
LtCol Wayne Byerely
Chaplain Byerely continued to process applications for Chaplains and Caracter Development Instructors in a timely manner.
During 2017 Chaplain Byerely made sure that MER was ready for the new Mission Chaplain and Chaplain Support qualifications,
with preparation of training materials prior to rollout of the new materials.
Historian
Major Joseph E Myers
The MER Historian provided support to LtCol Phil Saleet’s Museum outreach at the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
Inspector General
MER completed 2017 without any open IG complaints, or concerns
Safety
Major Guy Butts
MER completed 2017 without any open safety issues.
