C I V I L A I R PAT R O L
Uj~~: Hundreds of applications for active ~uty service with the Civil
Air Patrol have been received by National Headquarters. Already some cf the members
w h o w a n t e d i m m e d i a t e s e r v i c e h a v e b e e n n o t i fi e d a n d a r e e n r o u t e t o C A P Ta s k F ~ r c e s .
M a n y m e m b e r s , i n s t e a ~ o f s i g n i n g u p f o r o n e , t w o , o r t h r e e m o n t h s p e r y e a r,
have indicated their desire to serve for the duration. A great variety of aviation
talent is now ava/lable in this pool of CAP personnel. Most, however, are pilots
and it should be borne in mind that members with other skills, especially A &
mechanics, will bs needed~

regular scheduled flights or on a stand-by basis with planes and pilots on the alert
and ready for consignments. Several Group Commands along main traffic routes have
been advised as to developments. It is expected that most of the traffic will be
localized within a hundre~ miles or so of the base Of a given oourler task force.
H o w e v e r, i f o n e t a s k f o r c e c a n h a n d l o n g - h a u l s h i p m e n t s o v e r t o a n o t h e r a t a r e l a y
point, consignments can be routed on to distant points without taking any plane
outside its task force area.
D R AY T S TAT U S - - i n q u i r i e s f r o m m e m b e r s i n d i c a t e t h a t i n s o m e a r e a s t h e i m p r e s s i o n h a s
been created that CAP work constitutes grounds for draft exemption. As set forth in
the original pamphlet iseueCl when CAP was organizedj members are not exempt since the
aim of the Patrol is to mcbilise the airmen who are ineligible for military service
by reason of age, minor disabilities, dependents, work in essential wartime industries,
or other good reasons. Xn some iDetances, local draft boards have granted deferment|
to CAP members on active duty missions, ~ut this is a matter entirely between the
individual member and his draft board.
FLOOD MISSZON--@rcup 822, ~lackwell, 0kla., went promptly trite action after a recent
rainstorm, the heaviest in 20 years, caused all streams throughout the area te rise
to flood stage. As soon as weather conditions permitte~, Group 0ommander Walter D.
Mauk cal~ed out the Patrol. Ylights were made over the region to survey rising
waters and spot bridges which were washed out. Raclio reports were rela.ved through

who were marooae~ were instructed to
spread a bed sheet on the roof as a
distress signal plainly visible from
the nir. The non-flying members of
the Patrol gave wideopread assistance
in plicing evacuated areas and aiding
in rescue work. The gas line which
supplies neighboring cities ~as patrolled tc watch for breaks. The Mayor an~
Chief of Police were flown ever the
are~. Air ferry service was rendered
to defense workers who were cut off from
their ~obe in Wichita® A service crew
was busy cn the field to keep 'em flying.
