VIRGINIA WING, CY 2017 ANNUAL HISTORY REPORT

This abbreviated report will serve as Virginia Wing’s annual report for the calendar year 1
January to 31 December 2017.
JANUARY 2017
VAWG continued to field strong teams in the popular Cyberpatriot competition. The first training of the
CY was on 13-15 January. The CISM team had their annual training on the same weekend. The training
was conducted by an outside contractor with expertise in the field. SLS was held at wing HQ on the 2122 of the month while Encampment 2017 cadre selection was held on the 21st. VAWG started working to
enhance our capabilities by holding our first in a long time, Overwater Survival Course on 28 January.

FEBRUARY 2017
Col Dean Gould assumed command of the Wing on 4 February at wing HQ, appointing Lt Col
Elizabeth Sydow as his vice and Lt Col Calvin Chandler as Chief of Staff. A subsequent
commander’s call and CAC meeting were held. On the 18th Group 1 held a TLC while Group 4
conducted MO/MS training. The Wing SAREX took place over 24-25 February at Winchester
and Chesterfield.
MARCH 2017
On the 2nd VAWG participated with a strong representation at Legislative Day and the
subsequent Command Council. The VAWG Cadet Competition was held on 10-12 March.
GSAR Weekend 1 occurred 17-19 March while VAWG hosted the MER Cadet Competition on 31
March to 1 April along with the second weekend of GSAR.
APRIL 2017
On the weekend of 21-23 there was a NCOA/DCIS held while Group 2 bivouacked while training
in GT and ES disciplines. Between 28-30 March the wing participated in the Constant Watch
communications exercise coupled with a wing SAREX at Winchester. During that same time the
wing assisted with a VDEM National Disaster Medical Services Drill at wing HQ.
MAY 2017
Continuing the tradition of community support, AE, and RR, VAWG supported the Manassas
Airshow on the 6th while having our quarterly commander’s call and CAC meeting. The next
weekend saw VAWG have Encampment staff training and Mountain Fury clinic, 12-14 May. 1921 May VAWG participated on the Warbirds Airshow in the tidewater and G1000 ground school
at HQ. Honor Guard instruction was held at Wing HQ on 26-28 May while two members
completed National Staff College held at Maxwell AFB, 21-27 May.

JUNE 2017
VAWG worked with WVWG in our annual OPS EVAL on 5-11 of the month. The 17th was
comprised of Group 4 ES training, Langley AFB Open House support, Udvar Hazy Innovations in
Flight support and participation in Women Can Fly activities at Warrenton and Hampton Roads
airports. On 24 May Group 3 hosted a TLC.
JULY 2017
VAWG’s Encampment 2017 at Ft Pickett saw participation from 5 wings, had over 350
participants, completed over 75 orientation rides, successfully implemented an advanced
training squadron, completing the largest encampment ever in Virginia. IACE was hosted at
Raptortown 27-30 July. That same weekend was the VAWG Cyber Camp & Honor Guard
College.
AUGUST 2017
The Cadet Program Leadership Conference was conducted 18-20 August with a Wingwide
SAREX held at multiple division bases on 25-27 August. A substantial contingent participated in
the CAP National Conference in San Antonio. While there, VAWG members activated on the
Hurricane Harvey that hit the area.
SEPTEMBER 2017
VAWG hosted the MER Warrior’s Challenge at Raptortown on 8-10 while Group 3 held ES
training during a Group bivouac. Airshow support at JB Andrews and Oceana NAS over the
weekend of 15-17. The wing participated in the AFA Air, Space and Cyber Conference in DC on
18-20 September. Our brethren in the Virginia Defense Force (VDF) conducted an exercise on
22-23 September that VAWG supported with air and communications sorties. On 29-30
September the wing held an ICS 300 class at HQQ while supporting the Leesburg Airshow.
OCTOBER 2017
The wing helped out at the Virginia Festival of Flight in Suffolk on 7-8. The Culpeper Air Festival
saw CAP support on 14 October. A wing wide SAREX was held 20-22 October out of Culpeper.
On the 28th, VAWG helped out at the Shannon Airport Harvest festival.
NOVEMBER 2017
On the 1-2 VAWG joined in with the Home school community in the Innovations for Tomorrow
at the Richmond International Raceway. The second DCIS/NCOA was on 3-5 November while th
commander’s call/CAC meeting was on the 3rd. VAWG proudly presented a Congressional Gold
Medal on the 9th at Coastal Composite Squadron. A Branch Director’s course was held at wing
HQ on 18-19 November.

DECEMBER 2017
Our first Professional Development Day (PD DAY) on the 2-3 December at HQ was comprised of
a UCC, SLS, and TLC. VAWG had a strong contingent with Wreathes Across America at Arlington
while many units participated at the local level. The year ended with Group 4 first aid course on
30 December.

The 29-30 May was comprised of VAWG Cyber Camp and the Honor Guard College at
Raptortown.
