SUMMARY NARRATIVE OF MAJOR ACTIVITIES

Chapter I

OPERATIONS

Search and Rescue
FISCAL YEAR 2017 WAS A PRODUCTIVE YEAR FOR THE ALASKA WING'S SEARCH
AND RESCUE OPERATIONS AS IT PROCESSED FIFTY SIX MISSIONS, FOURTY
SEVEN OF WHICH INVOLVED ELTS, ELEVEN MISSING PERSONS AND FOUR
MISSING AIRCRAFT. IT EXECUTED NINETY SEVEN AIR AND TWENTY EIGHT
GROUND SORTIES, EARNING IT TWENTY SIX FINDS AND SEVEN SAVES.

CAP COLLABORATED OPERATIONALLY ON GROUND SEARCHES WITH THE RED
CROSS, STATE TROOPERS, AND JUNEAU MOUNTAIN RESCUE PARTNERS,
COORDINATED WITH THE US COAST GUARD FROM THE AIR, DID EXTENSIVE
INTRA-ORGANIZATION TRAINING OF SENIOR MEMBERS AND CADETS IN AREAS
SUCH AS LOCATING ELTS, INSTRUCTING ON MISSION PILOT FUNCTIONS AND
TEACHING THE PROPER USE OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES, AND
CONDUCTED COLD WATER SURVIVAL AND VESSEL SAFETY TRAINING WITH THE
ALASKA MARITIME SAFETY EDUCATION ASSOCIATION.
Disaster Relief
DISATER RELIEF ACTIVITIES INVOLVED PARTICIPATION IN THE GREAT
AMERICAN SHAKE-OUT CASUALTY SCENARIO WITH THE RED CROSS, A WING
LED SKI PLANE CLINIC AND A MASS INOCULATION EXERCISE WITH THE
CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL.
Homeland Security
ARCTIC EDGE WAS THE WING'S MOST HIGH-PROFILE HOMELAND SECURITYRELATED JOINT PORT SECURITY EXERCISE CONDUCTED WITH THE US COAST
GUARD.
Counterdrug
THE ALASKA WING HAD NO COUNTER DRUG INVOLVEMENT IN FY2017.
Chapter II AEROSPACE EDUCATION

Internal Aerospace Education
INTERNAL AEROSPACE EDUCATION WAS AN EXTENSIVE FOCUS OF THE ALASKA
WING AND INCLUDED A FLY-IN WITH THE GASTINEAU AEROMODELERS
SOCIETY, A TOUR OF THE JUNEAU AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER, AND PRACTICE
WITH REMOTE CONTROL AIRCRAFT AND AIRCRAFT SIMULATORS.
External Aerospace Education
EXTERNAL AEROSPACE EDUCATION OUTREACH WAS CONDUCTED THROUGH
PERSONAL MEETINGS WITH THE PUBLIC AT THE FOURTH OF JULY FESTIVAL, A
FLY-IN, AN OPEN HANGAR AND COLOR GUARD PRESENTATION. ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL STUDENTS TOURED HANGARS AND PARTICIPATED IN SIX AREA
STATIONS OF AEROSPACE EDUCATION..

CADET PROGRAMS

Cadet Programs
CADET PROGRAMS EXTENDED TO NEW AREAS OF THE STATE INCLUDING
HOONAH, HAINES AND TOK AND INVOLVED ORIENTATION RIDES. AN HONOR
GUARD PERFORMED AT A CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL CEREMONY
RECOGNIZING A LOCAL RESIDENT FOR HIS SERVICE DURING WORLD WAR II. AN
OPEN HOUSE WAS HELD TO DISPLAY CAP'S HISTORY, ACKNOWLEDGE THE
SUPPORT OF VARIOUS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND CONDUCT A TOUR OF
A CAP CADET TRAINING OFFICE AND AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER.
Cadet Activities
THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT COMPONENT OF CADET ACTIVITIES WAS
INTEGRATED INTO AN AMERICAN LEGION STATE CONFERENCE, VARIOUS HIKES,
PT EXERCISES, SAFETY AND SURVIVAL DISCUSSIONS, A COLOR GUARD
PRESENTATION, THE 4TH OF JULY PARADE, A SURVIVAL EXPOSITION, WINTER
ENCAMPMENT AND GLIDER ACADEMY.
Drug Demand Reduction
SOME HANGAR-BASED DRUG DEMAND REDUCTION EDUCATION CLASSES WERE
GIVEN TO CADETS.
