SUMMARY NARRATIVE OF MAJOR ACTIVITIES

Chapter I

OPERATIONS

Search and Rescue
DURING THIS PERIOD THE SQUADRON PARTICIPATED IN SEVERAL SAR
MISSIONS, EXERCISES AND PROFICIENCY. A TOTAL OF 84.4 HOURS WERE FLOWN
IN SUPPORT OF THESE MISSONS. THE UNIT ALSO FLEW 10 HOURS OF AERIAL
PHOTOGRAPHY MISSIONS ISO THE SAR MISSIONS AND MISSILE SILO RECON.
DURING THIS PERIOD THE SQUADRON WAS ASSESSED TO HAVE HAD ONE SAVE
OF A LIFE FROM A DOWNED AIRMAN AND THREE OTHER ELT FINDS.
Disaster Relief
DURING THIS PERIOD THE UNIT WAS TASKED TO FLY NUMEROUS SORTIES ISO
HURRICANE HARVEY. THE CREWS ACCOMPLISHED AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
SORITIES. ALSO DURING THE 2017 YEAR, OVER 25 HOURS WERE FLOWN ISO
AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY MISSIONS TASKED BY FEMA FOR THE MISSOURI,
ILLINOIS, AND ARKANSAS FLOODING. THESE PHOTOS WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN
THE GOVENRNOR AND PRESIDENT DECLARING THE AREAS AS NATURAL
DISASTERS AND PROVIDING RELIEF FUNDS.
Homeland Security
DURING THIS PERIOD THE UNIT HAS BEEN TASKED TO PROVIDE ESCORT
SERVICES TO THE AIR FORCE MQ-9 REAPER TRAINING PROGRAM. FOUR
MEMBERS VOLUNTEERED THEIR TIME TO GO TDY AND FLY C-182'S TO PROVIDE
VISUAL CLEARANCE OF THE SURROUNDING AIRSPACE FOR TRAINING REAPER
AIRCRAFT. APPROXIMATELY 16 HOURS WERE FLOWN DURING THIS TIME.
Counterdrug
THE UNITS CD MISSION IS NOT DISCUSSED DUE TO THE CLASSIFIED NATURE OF
THE MISSION RESULTS.

FOR 2017 THE UNIT HAD FIVE MEMBERS COMPLETE THE YEAGER AWARD. FOR A
TOTAL OF 17 OF 44 SQUADRON MEMBERS WITH THEIR YEAGER AWARD. DURING
THIS PERIOD APPROXIMATELY SIX BRIEFINGS WERE CONDUCTED ON TOPICS
RANGING FROM FUEL STARVATION TO AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS. THERE WERE
THREE BRIEFINGS CONDUCTED ON AVIATION CAREERS THAT EXPOSED UNIT
MEMBERS TO DIFFERENT SCENARIOS INCREASING MEMBERS SITUATIONAL
AWARENESS AND AERONAUTICAL DECISION MAKING SKILLS.
External Aerospace Education
THE SQUADRON PARTICIPATED IN A NUMEROUS CADET ORIENTATION RIDES.
THE UNIT WORKED WITH CADET SQUADRONS TO PROVIDE AN AIRCRAFT AT
LOCAL AIRPORT AVIATION EDUCATION EVENTS. THE UNIT SUPPORTED SPIRIT
AIRPORT AT IT'S ANNUAL AVIATION DAY FAIR IN WHICH WE POSTIONED AN
AIRCRAFT ON THE RAMP WITH SENIOR MEMBER MANNING A "BOOTH" THROUGH
OUT THE DURATION OF THE EVENT TO PROVIDE AEROSPACE EDUCATION AND
TOUR THE AIRCRAFT.

GUIDES AS WELL AS TEACHING SOME OF THOSE TASKS USING

GROUND AS WELL AS UDF TEAMS. MISSION SCANNER,
OBSERVER, AIRBORNE PHOTOGRAPHER AND PILOT ARE IN

PLANNING SESSION. ALL EXPENDITURES WERE APPROVED BY THE

HAVE ASSISTED A FEW OF OUR SENIOR MEMBERS IN AREAS OF
ENCOURAGEMENT. WE ARE PLANNING A CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
TRAINING SESSION DURING THE 1ST QUARTER OF 2018.

1. UNIT HISTORIAN ATTENDED SEVERAL MONTHLY MEETINGS OF THE
MISSOURI AVIATION HISTORICAL SOCIETY AT CREVE COUR AIRPORT.
AT THE NOVEMBER MEETING, THERE WERE 21 AVIATION RELATED
AGENCIES AND CAP WAS ALLOWED FIVE MINUTES TO PRESENT AN
OVERVIEW OF THE NATIONAL SYSTEM. WE HAVE BEEN ASKED TO
PRESENT A 30 MNUTE POWER POINT FOR A LATER MEETING IN THE
FALL OF 2018. THE COMMERATIVE AIR FORCE IS HOSTING A WWII
REMEMBERANCE DAY WITH SEVERAL PERIOD AIRCRAFT INCLUDING A
P-38. WE ARE DISCUSSING BEING AT THIS EVENT WITH A CAP PERIOD
PLANE.
Health Services
1. DURING THIS PERIOD, OUR HEALTH SERVICES OFFICER WAS NOT
ACTIVE. DURING THE THIRD QUARTER THE COMMANDER ASSIGNED A
NEW HEALTH SERVICES OFFICER. DURING THIS PERIOD THE NEW
HEALTH SERVICES OFFICER CONDUCTED TWO TRAINING CLASSES ON
BASIC FIRST AID AND CPR. A TOTAL OF 12 MEMBERS WERE CERTIFIED
AND UPDATED.

HANGAR, ALSO LOCATED AT SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS, MO. AIRPORT DUE TO
SAFETY CONCERNS RELATIVE TO THE RAPID INCREASE IN
MEMBERSHIP THE SQUADRON EXPERIENCED IN 2017.
